Good Samaritan Hunger Center operates largely with the work of volunteers. Without you we can not do what we do.

Kitchen Volunteers

Monday, Tuesday and Friday Mornings, 9:30 AM to Noon

Volunteers must be at least 16 years old to work in the kitchen

Help prepare salads, vegetables, sandwiches and other food items under the direction of our cook for our hot meal programs and soup for our grocery distribution


Drivers

Weekday mornings from 9 AM to 11 AM

Pick up food donations. Also, looking for someone to learn all of the ropes of the Grocery Bag and Hot Meal Site programs.

Many local restaurants, bakeries and supermarkets generously donate food on a weekly basis. We need drivers to pick up food and deliver it to the center. Drivers arrive at the center and use one of the GSHC vans. Potential drivers must have a valid driver’s license and an excellent driving record. Potential drivers must submit a copy of their license to our auto insurance carrier for approval.


Site Volunteers

Grocery Bag Program

Three times a month each at the below locations

Volunteers arrive at the site about 1 hour beforehand, and are usually finished by 30 minutes afterward.

A parent or guardian must accompany volunteers under the age of 16 at all times.

  • Assist with client registration
  • Pack the food into grocery bags
  • Distribute food, soup and produce,
  • Help set up the room and help with cleanup
The last three Tuesdays of the month from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Site Volunteers – Hot Meal Sites

Hot Sit-Down Meal Program – served from 3 to 4 PM

Weekly at the below locations

Volunteers arrive at the site around 2:45 and are usually finished by 4:15 PM
A parent or guardian must accompany volunteers under the age of 16 at all times.

  • Help unload the food from our van when we arrive
  • Help set up the room and help with cleanup
  • Help serve the food
  • Help reload the food into the van after the meal

Event Volunteers

Currently recruiting volunteers for Our 20th Annual Soup for the City Event.

Event to be held November 4, 2017 at the Greek Community Center, 129 S. Union Street, Akron, Ohio 44304

  • Volunteers are needed to help collect donations for the silent auction (weeks leading up to auction)
  • Help Set Up event venue (November 3, 2017) time TBA
  • Help Pick up Soup Donations the day of the event (November 4, 2017)
  • Help with donor registration—day of event
  • Miscellaneous—To Be Determined.
